On March 16th, 2025, the Grew Bancroft Foundation, Carlton College, and Tsuda University co-hosted the lecture, “Why Liberal Arts Education, and Where to Study?" at Sendagaya Campus.
President Yuko Takahashi and President Alison Byerly of Carleton College, Minnesota, USA, took the stage for the discussion, which was facilitated by Vice President Atsuko Hayakawa.
The discussion began with an explanation of the characteristics of a liberal arts education, such as a broad interest in multiple perspectives and nurturing critical thinking, skills which are crucial in contemporary society.
President Takahashi and President Byerly then engaged in a lively exchange of views on the differences between liberal arts colleges and research universities, the characteristics and strengths of each, and the prospects for liberal arts education in the future.
During the Q&A session, participants asked many questions, demonstrating the high level of interest in liberal arts education.
After the lecture, participants gathered around the two presidents to further exchange views, and the event ended on a high note.
The event was a great opportunity for high school students considering their future career paths and their parents to deepen their understanding about liberal arts education.
