Are you interested and curious about what is happening both in Japan and in the world? More importantly, do you have questions and doubts when you read the newspaper? If you answered “yes” then I suspect you will enjoy university – a place where you choose what you want to study and engage in more talking and critical thinking than you ever did in high-school!

I am fundamentally interested in how Japan is responding to the challenges of globalisation and migration against the background of a rapidly ageing and shrinking society. How is Japan and Japanese identity changing – or not changing? Is Japan really becoming a multicultural society? In recent research I have framed these questions in terms of an “opening-up” or “closing-in” dilemma, something which I believe is the key problem facing Japan society today.
